The Republic of Yemen's official currency is the Yemeni rial. Although coins with fils as their denomination have not been produced since Yemen's unification, it is officially divisible into 100 fils. The value of the Yemeni rial keeps declining as a result of the ongoing political unrest. The currency has diverged as a result of the Yemeni Civil War. The currency has fallen into free collapse in southern Yemen, which is predominantly governed by separatists backed by the UAE and the former administration backed by Saudi Arabia. Banknotes printed after 2017 are not regarded as legal cash in northern Yemen, which is predominantly under the authority of Ansar Allah with assistance from Iran; as a result, the exchange rate has remained steady. Its size can be used to distinguish between banknotes produced before and after 2017.
