Since May 3rd, 1978, the dong has served as Vietnam's official currency. The State Bank of Vietnam is the issuer. The French Indochinese piastre was replaced by the dong as the currency of the governments that preceded North Vietnam and South Vietnam. Prior to inflation, it was divided into 10 hao, which were then further divided into 10 xu, none of which are currently in use. As of 2022, no coins will be used, and the Vietnamese dong will only be used as banknotes. Lower values are printed on paper, whereas denominations over 10,000 dong, or around $1 or €1, are printed on polymer. Vietnam is generally moving toward electronic payments. The Vietnamese dong is the third-lowest valued currency unit as of May 2021, with one US dollar roughly equating to 23,000 dong.
