The Republic of the Sudan uses the pound as its official currency. There are 100 piastres in a pound. The Sudanese Central Bank is the issuer. Following the imposition of economic sanctions on Sudan by the United States, the pound plummeted for the first time since 1997. The Sudanese pound kept dropping against the dollar, reaching an all-time low of LS 53. Due to the government cut, which was interrupted by some of the unsuccessful actions announced by the Central Bank of Sudan, there was a severe shortage of liquidity in this situation, which sapped all economic measures and caused significant losses in the external consequences for the Sudan as a whole. Following the Central Bank of Sudan's announcement that the cash reserve would be lifted to fight inflation, the Sudanese pound decreased in value relative to the US dollar. Due to the loss of 80% of its foreign exchange resources and 75% of its oil resources since South Sudan's 2011 separation, Sudan has experienced a shortage of foreign currency. The official price of the dollar was stated by the Sudanese government to range from LS 6.09 to LS 18.07 in the 2018 budget and LS 375.11 in March 2021.
