The Gambia adopted the dalasi as its official currency in 1971. There are 100 bututs in it. It replaced the Gambian pound at a rate of 1 dalasi = 0.2 pound = 4 shillings, or 1 pound = 5 dalasi. Unknown is the derivation of dala. The former 5 French West African franc note, whose origins are unknown, is referred to by financial phrases in many Francophonie languages. One possible derivation is the sound of "dollar," however butut is derived from the Wolof word butuut, which means "little object," and dalasi is a version of dalasi in other Mandinka dialects like daasi. Since there are no longer any bututs coins in use due to inflation, 1 dalasi has replaced them as the smallest unit of currency.
